Most recently, Thairu served asDeputy Managing Director at Consolidated Bank Ghana Ltd. In this capacity, heplayed a pivotal role in defining the bank’s strategic direction andoperational framework in the wake of Ghana’s financial sector consolidation.Reporting directly to the Board, he led the creation and implementation of theTarget Operating Model, established the bank’s technology and operationalinfrastructure, and structured business units to deliver sustainable financialresults. Additionally, Thairu managed critical relationships with stakeholderssuch as regulators, investors, and service providers, while also overseeingtechnology and operations functions.
Prior to joining Consolidated BankGhana Ltd, Thairu acted as Principal Consultant for a major banking sectorreform project commissioned by the Bank of Ghana. His responsibilities includedadvising on the recovery of failing financial institutions, leadinginvestigations into bank collapses, enhancing regulatory and governanceframeworks, and recommending strategies for recapitalisation, mergers, andsystemic stability. His efforts contributed significantly to nationalinitiatives aimed at restoring confidence and resilience in the financialsector.
Earlier in his career, Thairu wasPartner and Chief Operating Officer at Nubuke Investments LLP in London. Here,he was responsible for designing and managing the firm’s operationalinfrastructure, including risk, compliance, finance, technology, and humanresources. He held regulatory accountability with the UK Financial ConductAuthority, played a crucial role in establishing governance frameworks, managedinvestor relations, and ensured robust regulatory compliance throughout thebusiness.
Thairu began his professionaljourney at Standard Chartered Bank, undertaking several senior leadership rolesover a sixteen-year tenure. As Regional Head of Financial Market Operationsbased in London, he directed operational strategy and risk managementinitiatives across multiple regions. He also served as Head of MarketsOperations for Africa, where he implemented regional operating models, achieveda productivity increase of more than 25%, and drove revenue growth through newbusiness initiatives. His earlier positions involved spearheading majortransformation projects across global markets and establishing operationalframeworks in emerging markets.
Beyond his executive roles, Thairuis an active investor and advisor to start-ups and growth businesses, offeringsupport in strategy development, fundraising, and business scaling. Hisexperience encompasses both executive leadership and advisory roles, withsubstantial exposure to governance, risk oversight, and regulatory compliance.
Thairu holds an Honorary Doctoratein Business Management from the University of Maryland.
